Storm can’t muster offense, drop two to Nebraska Wesleyan

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team was defeated twice in a midweek American Rivers Conference doubleheader with Nebraska Wesleyan.

The Prairie Wolves (10-14, 2-8 A-R-C) shut out the Storm 5-0 in the first game before claiming the doubleheader sweep with a 5-2 victory.

Nebraska Wesleyan took a 3-0 lead with a two-run double in the third inning and stretched its advantage to four with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Simpson (11-12, 1-6 A-R-C) put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to push either across and the Prairie Wolves tacked on one final run in the ninth to set the final margin at five.

Simpson's offensive woes continued into the nightcap but the Storm stayed in the game much thanks to a solid outing by Mitchell Roeder. The freshman gave up just one run on three hits through his first seven innings while striking out eight including five in a row between the first and third frames.

The Storm managed to tie the game in the home half of the seventh only to have Nebraska Wesleyan retake the lead with two runs on three hits and an error in the eighth. Simpson looked primed to tie the game again with the bases loaded and just one out recorded, but the Prairie Wolves got out of the jam and put the finishing touches on the sweep with back-to-back RBI singles in the ninth.

Nebraska Wesleyan outhit Simpson 7-3 in the first game and 9-5 in the second. Bennett Wadstrom was the lone player to tally multiple hits for the Storm as he went 2-for-3 in game two.

The two squads will close the season series on April 18 in Lincoln.
