Simpson edges Springfield for third straight win

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Simpson College baseball team pushed its win streak to three games with a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Springfield.

The Storm's winning run came in the top of the 10th as Ryan Willis doubled with one out and came around to score on a base hit to right field by Brady Held. It was Held's second straight RBI single as the fifth-year senior leveled the game two innings prior with a single that scored Dalton Ferrin, who came in to pinch run for Sam Porter after a leadoff walk.

In the home half of the 10th, Dylan Schlee sent the runners down in order for the Storm victory. The freshman from Ankeny, Iowa has now thrown six scoreless innings in Florida, striking out five while allowing just one hit in that span. He improved to 2-1 overall with the win.

Simpson (5-6) nearly missed the opportunity to force extra innings when Springfield (3-4-1) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth via an error and a couple of walks. However, Willis managed to snag a line drive and throw the runner out at second to end the inning with a crucial double play.

Mitchell Roeder and Andrew Weig also contributed to the win on the mound. Roeder made his first career start and lasted six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Weig took the mound for the third time in Florida and allowed one hit in 2.0 innings of work, striking out two and walking a pair.

The Storm outhit the Pride 8-5 led by Held with two hits. Zach Fuller tallied his third extra-base hit of the trip with an RBI double in the second inning.
