Marquez, Juhl lead Simpson in home sweep of Hamline

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Fueled by big offensive performances from Matthew Marquez and Lucas Juhl, the Simpson College baseball team extended its win streak to seven games with a home sweep of Hamline.

The Storm (9-6) tallied their first shutout of the year with a 10-0 run-rule victory in game one and then completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in game two.

Marquez and Juhl went a combined 10-for-15 at the plate and drove in half of Simpson's 16 runs on the day. Ty Cowley and Ian Baldwin each chipped in three hits and two RBIs as well.

Game 1: Simpson 10, Hamline 0 (7 innings)
The Storm cracked the scoreboard in the fourth inning on a trio of RBI singles from Cowley, Juhl and Marquez and added two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Brady Held and Will Carlock.

Simpson tallied eight of its 12 hits between those two frames, with Baldwin and Juhl each recording doubles. The duo then plated two runs each in seventh to help initiate the run-rule victory. Held also sacrificed a run in as part of the five-run inning.

Juhl finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Marquez was 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Dante Dolash and Andrew Weig combined for the shutout victory on the hill, Simpson's first of the year. Dolash allowed four hits and three walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings, while Weig struck out two and did not allow a hit in the final 1.2 innings.

Game 2: Simpson 6, Hamline 3
Marquez and Juhl's perfect days carried into the second game as each drove in two runs in their first at-bats to give Simpson a quick 4-1 advantage. Cowley and Baldwin both scored on Marquez' base hit to right center after leading off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Zach Fuller and Marquez came around to score on Juhl's single through the right side.

The Pipers (4-12) scored two runs in the fourth but Simpson got them back in the seventh as Cowley drove Bennett Wadstrom home with a single up the middle before scoring on a balk shortly after.

Marquez and Cowley were both 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Storm offensively.

Simpson used five pitchers that combined for nine strikeouts while giving up eight hits and three walks. Starter Mitchell Roeder surrendered three runs on four hits over 3.2 innings, Easton Dunwoody, Trey Castile and Max Crooks secured the next 10 outs, and Dylan Schlee closed out the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.
