Volleyball closes weekend with pair of victories

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Simpson College volleyball team wrapped up the weekend with a pair of nonconference victories at the UW-La Crosse Invitational.

The Storm (6-7) started the day with a 3-2 win over Bethany Lutheran (1-6) before earning their first sweep of the season against Ripon (1-10).

At the conclusion of the tournament, libero Iman Ghalibaf was named to the seven-player All-Tournament Team. She dug up 54 balls over the weekend, averaging 3.6 per set, and added seven assists and three aces. Ghalibaf has now been named to two all-tournament squads this season following her recognition on St. Thomas' First Responder's All-Tournament Team last weekend.

Match 1: Simpson 3, Bethany Lutheran 2
In an opening set that saw 14 ties and nine lead changes, the Vikings were victorious 32-30. Simpson leveled the match with a 25-19 win in set two and and forced a fifth set with a come-from-behind victory in set four, 27-25, following Bethany Lutheran's 25-20 set three win.

Behind strong serving from Marissa Salber, Simpson took a crucial 6-0 lead in the fifth set. A kill from Peyton Mitchell gave the Storm another six-point lead before back-to-back aces from Ragan Shelgren put the team ahead by nine, 13-4. A kill and ace from Jessica Jacobs finished the match as the Storm improved to 2-0 in five-set matches this season.

The Storm tied their season-high nine blocks as Jacobs and Autumn Finch each had one solo and four assists.

Match 2: Simpson 3, Ripon 0
The Storm tallied their second win over Ripon this season with set scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-20. Simpson's offense came out of the gates on fire, knocking down 15 kills with just three errors in 29 attempts for a hitting percentage of .414. Jacobs and McKay combined for 10 kills from the outside and later teamed up for 12 in set number three, finishing the match with 18 and nine, respectively.

Salber dished out 33 assists and led the team with 11 digs.

Simpson hosts Luther for its home opener on Sept. 21. The match will be played inside the North Gym at Indianola High School beginning at 7:30 p.m.
