Storm unable to keep up with Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Simpson's football team showed fight throughout, but fell shy of picking up its first win, dropping a 35-14 decision at Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday.

The game started slow with both defenses imposing themselves. The Storm (0-2) forced consecutive three-and-outs, but also found their offense stifled early on. The Pointers (1-2) broke the game open late in the first quarter, with Brycen Cashin breaking off a 70-yard touchdown run.

The Simpson offense was starting to rattle off a couple first downs, but could not sustain a long drive against the Pointers defense. Cashin found the endzone for the second time midway through the second quarter, this time from 39 yards out.

After a missed field goal from the Pointers, the Simpson offense drove into UWSP territory, looking to cut into the lead. However, quarterback J Jensen III was stopped a yard short trying to scramble on 4th and 4. Despite there being less than a minute to go in the half, the Pointers hit a long pass play to get into the Simpson redzone, before scoring to make it a 20-0 deficit for the Storm at halftime.

The Storm needed a response out of the locker room and they got it, highlighted by Jensen completing three passes of over 10 yards on the drive. The final one was caught by senior receiver Reed Worth from 30 yards out, as the Storm cut the lead to two possessions, 20-7.

The Pointers, whose passing attack was stifled in the first half by the Storm, responded on the next drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass.

Not to be outdone, Jensen once again led the Storm back down the field. Combined with a heavy dose of Desmond Alexander, Jensen finished off the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Dahlgren, cutting the lead to 27-14. The Storm forced a quick three-and-out to get the ball back late in the third quarter, but Jensen's pass on the following drive was intercepted, giving the Pointers golden field position in the Storm redzone. It only took one play for UWSP to score, with Cashin scoring his third touchdown of the game from 19 yards out, to give the Pointers a 35-14 lead.

The fourth quarter saw limited action, with the Pointers controlling the clock. The Storm defense tightened up on its own side of the field, but the Pointer defense also forced two turnovers in the period, as the game finished 35-14.

Jensen completed 14 of his 28 passes for 140 yards for two touchdowns and three interceptions. Alexander led the team in rushing, sporting 18 carries for 92 yards. Worth, as he has done throughout his career, finished as the team's top receiver, catching four balls for 74 yards and a touchdown.

On the defensive side, the linebacker duo of Zach Truitt and Wyatt Schaben led the squad in tackles, with seven and six, respectively.
