Simpson wraps first season at NCAA Championships
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Simpson College men's gymnastics team wrapped up its inaugural season with three individuals competing at the NCAA Championships hosted by Pennsylvania State University.
Sterling Pariza and Michelangelo Villani both competed as all-around individuals, while Alex Catchpole was an individual qualifier for parallel bars. All three competed in the evening session of Friday's qualifying round.
Pariza turned in his second-highest all-around score of the season with a 74.765. He surpassed a score of 13 on floor (13.066) and vault (13.033), recorded a personal-best 12.433 on still rings, and earned a 12.833 on parallel bars, 12.000 on pommel horse and 11.400 on high bar.
Villani's highest event score was a 12.133 on still rings. He followed that with an 11.833 on parallel bars, a 10.766 on pommel horse and 10.200 on high bar, but had to drop out of the competition before the final two events due to injury.
Catchpole earned a solid 13.000 on parallel bars, tied for his second-highest score of the year.
Three teams and the top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor advanced to Saturday's finals session. Simpson did not have anyone advance.
