Villani, Catchpole win titles to lead Storm at home
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Michelangelo Villani won the all-around competition, Alex Catchpole claimed first on parallel bars, and the Simpson College men's gymnastics team registered a season-best 359.200 at home against Greenville.
Villani became the first gymnast in program history to win an all-around title with a score of 71.350. He led the team on both vault (14.000) and rings (12.150) and recorded a 12.350 on floor, 10.900 on pommel horse, 10.600 on high bar and a personal-best 11.350 on parallel bars.
Catchpole earned a 12.700 on parallel bars to become Simpson's first individual event winner of the season. His score along with a third-place finish and personal-best from Kyle Kincade (12.450) helped the Storm post a program-best 61.050 in the fifth rotation of the day.
Simpson also registered season-bests on floor (63.250) and vault (67.850), outscoring the Panthers by just under a point on floor for the team's first win in the event. Camden Bontempo and Sterling Pariza led the way with a 13.100 which tied for second place overall and is the highest floor mark by any Simpson gymnast this year.
Bontempo also led the Storm on high bar with an 11.650 and Pariza claimed runner-up honors with a 71.050 all-around score, the first time he surpassed 70 points. Ethan Sipos was Simpson's leader on pommel horse, earning a program-record 12.000.
