Jeremy Johnson named Simpson head men’s and women’s golf coach

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- After spending two decades in the Simpson College admissions department, Jeremy Johnson travels across campus to begin his role as the head men's and women's golf coach and athletic recruitment coordinator, Director of Athletics Marty Bell announced.

"We are very excited to have Jeremy lead our golf programs," Bell said. "He is well connected to the golf community and this will serve him well as he transitions into his coaching role. His wealth of experience in recruiting students to Simpson College will allow him to build a sustainable-competitive model for our golf programs. Additionally, his years of enrollment management experience will be a great resource for our coaching staff and will allow athletics to contribute more efficiently to the overall recruiting efforts for Simpson College."

Johnson takes over for Larry Shoop, who led both programs during the 2020-21 seasons. Shoop served as head coach for the men from 2002-08 and 2020-21, and took over at the helm of the women's squad in 2014.

"I am excited for the opportunity to lead the Simpson golf programs," Johnson said. "My goal is to instill an atmosphere of trust, commitment and hard work. I want to challenge my golfers to grow academically, athletically, professionally and personally. Simpson has been a part of me for over 20 years, and I believe in this place and the value of the education you can receive from this institution."

The Wapello, Iowa native served as an assistant director of admissions and transfer admissions during his tenure in the office. He was the liaison between the admission and athletic departments to provide a constant communication line between the two groups. Johnson is currently the Vice President of the Board of Directors at the Indianola Country Club, where he's been a member since 2004.

Prior to entering admissions, Johnson worked in sales for the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx in Jackson, Tennessee in Minor League Baseball from 1999-2001.

Johnson's roots run further than his work on campus. He's a 1999 graduate of Simpson with degrees in mass communication and sport administration. He lettered once in baseball while also competing on the basketball team.
