Coe evens season series with Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College men's basketball team aimed for a season sweep of the Coe Kohawks on Saturday afternoon but fell short in an 84-62 loss inside Cowles Fieldhouse.

The two teams played a fairly even first half as both squads shot just under 45 percent from the floor. Caden Rehmeier tied the game up at eight with a triple before Coe (13-5, 5-4 A-R-C) pushed back in front with a 9-2 run. Eight consecutive points by the Storm (4-12, 1-6 A-R-C) put Simpson up by one, 18-17, but the Kohawks halted the home team's momentum with back-to-back treys and took a 33-26 lead into half.

In the second half, Tajen Ross and Jack Hutchinson combined for 24 points but the Storm defense couldn't slow the visitors as they connected on 60.7 percent of their field goals and took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe (14-17) to outscore Simpson 51-36 on their way to the 22-point victory.

In his debut game with the Storm, Ross made his presence known by knocking down 9-of-19 shots and three free throws for 22 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds and an assist. Hutchinson had 12 points, three rebounds and an assist, Chris Honz finished with nine points, seven boards and an assist, and Deontei Johnson contributed six rebounds and four points.
