Rehmeier drains nine triples in OT loss to Rams

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Caden Rehmeier was one three-pointer away from tying an 18-year old program record but it wasn't enough for the Simpson College men's basketball team to even the season series with Cornell as the Rams rallied in the second half to force overtime and steal the victory.

Rehmeier led all scorers with a career-high 31 points fueled by nine three-pointers, the second-highest single game total in team history behind Josh Richter's 10 triples in February 2003. The freshman shot 64.3 percent behind the arc with four trifectas in the first half and five in the second, while also adding seven rebounds and a steal.

Along with Rehmeier, freshman Jack Hutchinson hit double figure scoring with 12 points and senior Chris Honz posted his second double-double in as many games with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

After Simpson (4-8) went into the locker room ahead 34-27, Cornell (9-4) rallied to tie the game at 49-all with 11:36 left in regulation. Five points between Buck Eagleburger and Rehmeier put the Storm back in front before a 13-7 Cornell run gave the home team its first lead since early in the opening half.

Trent Williamson grabbed the lead back and Deontei Johnson added a score to put Simpson ahead 65-63 with just over two minutes left, but the Rams evened the score shortly after and neither team could convert the go-ahead bucket in the final minute. After nearly three minutes of scoreless action in overtime, Cornell rattled off seven straight points and held on for the win.
