Moon shatters 37-year-old record in 15th-annual Kip Janvrin Open

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The 15th-running of the Kip Janvrin Open ended with some excitement as Spencer Moon broke a 37-year-old record in the 5,000 meters to end the Simpson College track and field's lone home event.

Over 800 student-athletes, representing 33 colleges and universities from around the nation, visited Indianola on Friday to take part in the meet.

In his first time running in the event, Moon clocked a 14:26.13 to pass Danny Bauer's mark of 14:28.70 that was set in 1984. Moon's time earned him a runner-up performance and is now the sixth fastest in the nation.

Carter Berkey soared 6.66 meters to end fourth in the long jump and Ulysses Patterson talled eighth in his first Kip Janvrin Open experience.

Max Cleveland (110 hurdles), Steven Cruz-Castro (400) and Mason Spree (hammer throw) turned in sixth-place results in their respective events for the Storm. Craig Garrison cracked the top 10 with a seventh-place nod in the 200.

Audrey Arnold started the event off for Simpson in the 100-meter hurdles. The freshman captured sixth with a time of 15.42 seconds. Arnold also tallied ninth in the long jump.

Jamie Glanz produced another top-10 performance for Simpson, this time in the high jump. Glanz soared 1.55 meters for a career best. She also ended 13th in the long jump nad 15th in the 100-meter hurdles.

Simpson honored its nine seniors during the meet for their final time competing on home soil. Jordan Baldwin, Jamie Glanz, Cole Jacobsen, Nathan Magalhaes, Katelyn Mangold, Elliott Meyer, Seth Nostrala, Mac Roush and Mason Spree were all recognized.

The Storm return to action next Friday in the Central/Nebraska Wesleyan Triangular. Competition begins at 3:30 p.m. in Pella, Iowa.
