Trio earn gold for Storm in season opener

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Simpson College men's track and field team had three performers collect first-place finishes in the team's first action of the season at the Dubuque Triangular on Saturday.

The men tallied 72 points as seniors Harry Dudley and Mason Spree, and sophomore Spencer Moon all finished first in their respective events.

Moon shined in the mile to capture first with a time of 4:18.27. Moon moved up to two spots to third place in program history in the event. Freshman James Murray was fourth and sophomore Clay Billheimer was fifth in the race.

Dudley collected seven points for the team in the 3,000-meter race after crossing the finish in first with a time of 8:52.94. Dudley trimmed 45 seconds off his previous-best mark in the race. Senior Seth Nostrala and sophomore Eric Baldus ended third and fourth, respectively, behind Dudley.

Spree collected the third top honor for the men, this time a field event. Spree had a toss of 16.85 meters in the weight throw for his new career high. Spree also hurled the shot put 13.68 meters for fourth place.

Moon grabbed second in the 800, while Murray and Billheimer followed closely with fourth and fifth-place showings. Sophomore Max Cleveland finished second in the 55-meter hurdles, while senior Elliott Meyer crossed in third.

The Storm travel to Storm Lake on Saturday, Feb. 13 for the Buena Vista Triangular. Along with Simpson and the Beavers, Wartburg will be in attendance.
