Castile breaks career strikeout record, Simpson tops Loras

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Trey Castile became the program's all-time strikeout leader and the Simpson College baseball team used two big innings of offense to take down Loras 8-3 in Friday's series opener.

Castile both tied and broke Simpson's all-time strikeout record in the seventh inning, officially moving past former teammate Brady Held with his sixth strikeout of the day. He now has 241 career strikeouts.

The Storm (12-16, 5-8 A-R-C) scored four runs on three singles in the fourth as well as three runs on three straight doubles in the eighth to aid Castile's effort on the mound. Zach Fuller (3) and Joel Sampson (2) each drove in multiple runs.

SCORING BREAKDOWN

  • The Duhawks (17-8, 6-3 A-R-C) scored all three of their runs in the third inning highlighted by a two-run double by Nick DiBenedetto.
  • The Storm came charging back in the fourth and took the lead with four runs on three hits and an error. Nate Cagley plated the first run followed by an RBI single by Joel Sampson and two-run base hit to center field by Zach Fuller.
  • Two innings later, the Storm added another tally as Cagley came home on a groundout after reaching first on an error.
  • After Eli Feekin worked a 1-2-3 inning to start the eighth, Sampson, Fuller and Sam Campin went back-to-back-to-back with doubles in the home half to stretch Simpson's lead to 8-3.
  • Drew Carlson moved from second to the mound in the ninth and closed out the win with a flyout and two straight swinging strikeouts.
