Storm fall twice to Beavers

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team fell twice to Buena Vista on Saturday at McBride Field.

The Storm (7-11, 0-3 A-R-C) pulled within one twice in the first game but ultimately fell 11-8. The Beavers (13-4, 2-0 A-R-C) put on an offensive display in the final game of the weekend, outhitting Simpson 17-3 en route to a 14-0 victory in seven innings.

GAME ONE BREAKDOWN

  • Simpson took advantage of an unearned run in the first for a 1-0 lead. Dalton Ferrin singled to center field, moved to second on a groundout and came around to score on a miscue by the Beaver infield.
  • Buena Vista scored five unanswered across the third and fourth innings highlighted by a two-run triple from Drew Taylor.
  • The two squads traded a run in the sixth before Simpson pulled within one, 6-5, in the seventh. Sam Porter led off the frame with a base hit and Tyson McAlexander and Drew Carlson followed with a triple and single, respectively. With the bases loaded, Ian Baldwin drove Carlson home with a single to left field.
  • The Beavers used a three-run triple by Jordan Mathewson to go back in front by four, but the Storm managed to close the cap to one once again in the eighth thanks to doubles from Carlson and Ferrin.
  • Buena Vista answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half and the Storm managed just one hit in the ninth.

GAME TWO BREAKDOWN

  • Buena Vista lit up the scoreboard early with five runs in each of the first two innings. Zach Pleggenkuhle (3), Joel Garcia (2) and Brandon Jenkins (2) all had multiple RBIs during the stretch.
  • The Beavers plated two more runs in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to extend the lead to 13-0.
  • Garcia drove in the final run of the game with a single to left field in the bottom of the sixth.
