Simpson completes season sweep over Nebraska Wesleyan

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Nate Cagley and Ian Baldwin combined for four extra-base hits in game one, Tyson McAlexander drove in the winning run of game two following a two-out triple by Sam Campin, and the Simpson College baseball team completed a series sweep over Nebraska Wesleyan with a pair of home wins.

The Storm (11-16, 4-8 A-R-C) had six of their 11 hits go for extra bases in the opener and added three more in the nightcap, winning 7-3 and 6-5. Cagley hit his fourth home run of the season along with three doubles, Baldwin ripped two triples as part of a 3-for-5 effort in the first game, and Campin recorded his first career triple in the eighth inning of game two which led to the game-winning run.

Easton Dunwoody picked up the win in the first game, throwing all but the final two outs which were recorded by Andrew Weig. Dunwoody allowed three runs, six hits and three walks while striking out three batters. In game two, Alex Foster struck out five and surrendered just one hit in three innings of relief to help lift the Storm to victory. Dylan Schlee pitched the final five outs and did not allow a baserunner for the win.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Sam Porter and Nate Cagley opened the second inning with back-to-back doubles to provide Simpson a 1-0 lead. After a sacrifice bunt by Zach Fuller, Sam Campin hit a sacrifice fly to score Cagley from third and make the score 2-0.
  • The Storm added another run in the third inning. Ian Baldwin tripled down the right field line and came home on a single up the middle by Drew Carlson.
  • Simpson walked in a fourth run in the sixth and used a couple of extra-base hits by Joel Sampson and Baldwin in the eighth to stretch the advantage to 7-0. Sampson lined a two-run double down the left field line and scored on Baldwin's second triple of the game.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan (8-17, 1-10 A-R-C) prevented the shutout with a three-run home run by Evan Kling in the ninth.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • After the Prairie Wolves built a 3-0 lead, Nate Cagley smashed his fourth home run of the year to put two runs on the board for the Storm in the second.
  • Dalton Ferrin singled to left to score another run in the frame, and Zach Fuller gave Simpson its first lead in the third with his own base hit to left field.
  • A two-run single by Brady Bell put Nebraska Wesleyan ahead 5-4 in the fifth, but the Storm were quick to answer and tied things up on a sacrifice fly by Will Carlock.
  • The Prairie Wolves put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the eighth, but Dylan Schlee came into the game and got the Storm out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout.
  • In the bottom half, Sam Campin hit a massive triple to the gap in left center and scored the go-ahead run on Tyson McAlexander's single through the right side two batters later.
  • Schlee retired all three batters in the ninth to close out Simpson's first series sweep of the year.
