Storm shut out Monks twice to start Florida slate

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Trey Castile and Easton Dunwoody threw complete game shutouts to guide the Simpson College baseball team to a sweep of Saint Joseph's on Sunday at the RussMatt Invitational.

Simpson (6-2) used three unearned runs between the sixth and seventh innings to win the opening game 3-0. In game two, the Storm tallied four runs in the third and sixth innings as well as one in the fifth for a 9-0 victory.

Castile and Dunwoody limited the Monks (1-4) to just four hits and three walks on the day, combining for 18 strikeouts in the two wins. With his 10th strikeout of the opening game, Castile notched his 200th strikeout at Simpson.

GAME ONE BREAKDOWN

  • Simpson opened the scoring in the sixth inning when Tyson McAlexander crossed home plate on a passed ball after reaching on an error and advancing to third on a single by Joel Sampson.
  • The Storm capitalized on another miscue by the Monk's defense to go ahead 2-0 before the inning was over.
  • After three straight strikeouts by Trey Castile, Simpson stretched its lead to 3-0 with an RBI single by Dalton Ferrin in the top of the seventh. The Storm completed the victory with a double play in the bottom half.

GAME TWO BREAKDOWN

  • The Storm pieced together two straight walks followed with bases hits from Dalton Ferrin, Ian Baldwin and Will Carlock to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Kasey Carter and Drew Carlson drew two more walks before the inning was over, with Carlson's bringing home Baldwin from third for a four-run advantage.
  • Levi Herrick scored on Tyson McAlexander's single through the right side to put Simpson ahead 5-0 through five innings played.
  • Simpson put up another four-run inning in the sixth highlighted by a two-run double by Nate Cagley and an RBI-single from Carter.
  • Easton Dunwoody and the Storm defense put away three pinch hitters in the seventh to put a cap on the shutout.

GAME TWO LEADERS

NOTES

  • Trey Castile became the second Simpson baseball player to surpass 200 career strikeouts with his 11-strikeout effort in game one, joining Brady Held.
  • Simpson notches back-to-back shutouts for the first time in exactly five years when the Storm swept Utica on March 10, 2019.
