Simpson picks up first A-R-C win in weekend finale

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team defeated Luther 5-4 in Saturday's second game to earn its first American Rivers Conference win of the season.

Drew Carlson went 3-for-4 in the victory and drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dylan Schlee earned the win on the mound and Dante Dolash secured his first collegiate save with three swinging strikeouts in the ninth inning.

The Norse (13-7, 2-3 A-R-C) won the first contest of the day by a score of 8-3.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Luther built a 3-0 lead through the first five innings, scoring a pair of groundouts as well as an error.
  • The Storm capitalized on a miscue in the fifth as well as Will Carlock reached on an errant throw and scored on Drew Carlson's base hit to left field.
  • The Norse broke open the game with four unearned runs in the seventh inning and stretched the lead to seven with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
  • Much like the series opener, Carlock hit another clutch double in the bottom of the ninth to score a pair of runs, but the Storm could not get any closer.

  • Joel Sampson and Will Carlock drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to give the Storm their first lead of the weekend in the bottom of the third.
  • After Luther leveled the game in the fourth, Simpson responded with two runs to regain the lead. The Storm opened the inning with four consecutive hits, scoring runs on a double by Sam Campin and single by Ian Baldwin.
  • A Norse run in both the sixth and seventh innings tied the game once again going into the final two frames.
  • In the eighth, both teams got a runner on via a walk, but Simpson was the only one to capitalize. Carlock earned the free pass and was sacrificed over to second by Levi Herrick before scoring on Drew Carlson's base hit to left field.
  • Simpson faced a big threat in the ninth inning as the visitors immediately put two runners on with a walk and a single. Dante Dolash entered the game in relief and struck out Cullen Stamp for the first out. With the bases loaded, he tallied two more swinging strikeouts to lock up the team's first conference win of the year.
