Storm play close sets, come up short against Central

PELLA, Iowa – The Storm traveled to Pella tonight to face off against Central College in their fourth conference match of the season. The team fell to the Dutch in three close sets, fighting until the very end.

Jada Schmidt led the team in kills with nine, while Lauren Roman's errorless five-kill night was also impressive. Audrey Behrens led the team in assists with 10, and Ella Meyer led the team in digs, tallying 11 for the team.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Set one opened with a kill and an ace by Jada Schmidt for the Storm. The teams stayed close to even for most of the set, but Central (16-6, 3-1 A-R-C) went on a 3-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 13-10 lead. The Storm (6-12, 0-4 A-R-C) fought back to return to a tie with another ace and kill by Schmidt. The rest of the set remained close, but a late run by Central finished the set with the Storm falling 25-23.
  • The Storm attacked early in the second set with a kill by Peyton Mitchell. Simpson held a one point or more lead until a mid-set run by Central left the visitors down 13-10. A block by Mitchell cut off Central's run, and Simpson fought back to a tie with a kill by Lauren Roman. The teams reached another tie at 18-18 with a kill by Courtney Paxton, and they took the lead with an ace from Ella Meyer. A late-set 5-0 run by Central concluded the set with the Storm losing 26-24.
  • Simpson scored the first point of the third set, and the Storm took an early 4-1 lead with an ace by Peyton Mitchell. The Storm held the lead until a tie at 6-6. Central pulled ahead mid-set, but its run was cut short by Jada Schmidt at 14-10. The Storm fell to another late run, but they fought back with kills by Jada Schmidt and Lauren Roman. Simpson fell in set three 25-17.

The Storm will return to the court on Oct. 23 for their first home match of the year against Buena Vista. The match will begin at 6 p.m.
