Simpson falls to Bethel, St. Olaf on second day of UW-River Falls Tournament

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Storm women fell to Bethel (Minn.) and St. Olaf in day two of the UW-River Falls Tournament in a pair of hard fought matches.

The Storm (4-3) fought throughout the day to stay in the matches, taking a set off Bethel in the first match of the day. Amidst the losses, Audrey Behrens recorded a career-high three aces in the second set victory against Bethel.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Simpson came out with a strong start in the first set, going up 6-3 against Bethel, marked by three kills from Emmy Seiler. Bethel came back late in the game with a late run to close the set 25-14.
  • The Storm started slow in set two before making a comeback to tie at 9-9, assisted by a couple of kills from Courtney Paxton. A late 5-0 run with three aces by Audrey Behrens led to a Simpson victory in set two with a score of 25-20.
  • Simpson started behind Bethel's five point run in the third set before attempting a comeback in the mid set. The Storm lost set three 25-13.
  • Set four started slow until Simpson went on a 6-0 run in the middle of the set with two kills from Emily Williams and two kills from Peyton Mitchell. A late push from Bethel ended the set and the match 25-21.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • Set one began slow for the Storm, falling to St. Olaf's 6-0 run. A kill by Emmy Seiler put Simpson on the board, and the team eventually came back to a near tie in the middle of the set. St. Olaf finished the game ahead 25-17.
  • Simpson came out with a 4-0 run to begin set two. The Storm held the lead until a run from St. Olaf put the Storm behind 11-8. The back and forth set ended with St. Olaf winning 25-18.
  • The Storm played a back and forth game in the beginning of set three. A pair of kills from Jada Schmidt put the Storm back within one point, however the team struggled with a comeback, falling to St. Olaf in set three 25-17.

The Storm will return to play next weekend to face off against North Central (Ill.) at the Cornell tournament in Mount Vernon.
