Swimming opens up 2023 at home

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Both Simpson swimming and diving teams made their debut in 2023 with a home dual meet against Saint Mary's (Kan.) on Saturday, at the Indianola YMCA.

The women were once again led by standout Kate Minette, who collected three overall victories. Minette, the school record holder in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles, won both of those races today. Minette took first place in 25.82 in the 50 freestyle before returning to the pool less than an hour later and winning the longer distance in 57.69. Minette also anchored the Storm women in the 200 yard freestyle relay, claiming first place. She swam her 50 yard leg in 25.15, the fastest by almost two seconds of any other swimmer.

Other performances on the women's side included Katelyn Smith taking second place in the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:14.97, while Emma Haynes swam a 1:21.19 to take second place in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Jay Ceperley was a leading performer on the men's side, placing second in three separate events despite going against stiff competition that included swimmers that had met the NAIA B standard. Ceperley swam a season-best 1:55.80 in the 200 yard freestyle, before swimming a season-best 52.18 in the 100 freestyle. Ceperley's final performance came in the 100 yard breaststroke, swimming a 1:09.56, just tenths of seconds off his season-best.
