Minette earns A-R-C weekly honor

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Kate Minette of the Simpson College women's swimming and diving team earned the American Rivers Conference Performer of the Week award after her performances last weekend.

Minette, the first Simpson female swimmer to win the Performer of the Week award, broke two school records in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle at the Pioneer Classic, hosted by Grinnell. Minette placed second out of 76 swimmers in the shorter of those two distances, swimming a 24.57 to break Dana Kuiken's previous record of 25.01 that was set in February 2004. Minette then took third in the 100 yard freestyle, besting her own school record by one-hundredth of a second in a time of 54.54.

Minette also had success as part of two relay teams in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays. Minette swam the anchor leg in both relays, leading each squad to a fifth place finish out of 30 teams. Joined by teammates Katie Oosterhuis, Emma Haynes, and Breana Hinson, the team came just two one-hundredths of a second from another school record. Minette's 50 yard leg of 24.32 was the fastest individual leg of 120 swimmers. In the 400 relay, Minette swam a blistering 100 yard anchor leg of 52.95, once again the fastest individual leg of all swimmers and the fastest by over half a second.

Minette also set team-leading times in the 100 backstroke (1:06.31) and swam a 24.55 as the anchor leg in the 200 yard medley relay, with her anchor leg once again being the fastest of all competitors.
