Women's soccer gets back on track with 3-1 win

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Only three days removed from a 5-0 defeat against Gustavus Adolphus, the Simpson women's soccer team responded positively against William Penn, notching a 3-1 win in closing out a six-game home stand at Buxton Stadium Wednesday evening.

Playing in only her second game of the season due to illness, 2008 First-Team All-Iowa Conference selection Nicole Dillenburg (So., Urbandale, Iowa) provided a spark for the Storm with a pair of goals, as Simpson ended William Penn's three-game winning streak.

"We came back and played very well tonight," interim head coach Greg Velasquez said. "We fashioned some chances early that put us in advantageous positions."

For Dillenburg it was the third multi-goal match of her career.

Simpson (3-4, 0-0 IIAC) controlled the pace of the match early on, breaking into the scoring column 11 minutes 29 seconds into the match when Katherine Bird (So, Iowa City, Iowa) served a perfect cross from the near right wing to Ashlee Krider (Fr., Norwalk, Iowa), who flicked a header into the left net.

Krider played an integral role in the second goal of the night as well, setting up Dillenburg from seven yards out in the 39th minute. Dillenburg didn't require an assist for her second goal, as she broke into the Statesmen third and hammered a shot into the left corner from the right wing.

William Penn (3-3) got its only goal off the foot of Lauren Terrell, who found the back of the net from 10-yards out with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest.

Jessica Toyne (Fr., Bellevue, Neb.) improved her record as the starting keeper to 2-1, making six saves in the effort. Katie Burnett made five saves in the loss for William Penn.

The Storm goes on the road for the first time in 22 days when it goes to St. Joseph, Minn. to face St. Benedict Sept. 23 at 5 p.m.
