Women's soccer falls in opener

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Freshman Megan Petersen (Indianola, Iowa) grabbed 10 saves in her collegiate debut and the Storm put six of its 11 shots on goal, but UW-River Falls made good on two of its chances in taking a 2-0 win in the season opener.

UW-River Falls (1-0) got a goal from Eryn Lansverk in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead and added an insurance goal just over three minutes into the second frame. Janae Baron provided the second goal for the Falcons.

Petersen's 10 saves are the most for Simpson (0-1) since the second game of the 2008 campaign, when Whitney Franker made 12 stops in a 1-0 overtime loss at UW-LaCrosse. Mollie McMahon (Des Moines, Iowa) and Andrea Duncan (Marshalltown, Iowa) each put two shots on goal to lead the Storm.

After the season opener on the road, Simpson settles in for a six-game home stand beginning Friday against St. Mary's at Bill Buxton Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
