Schutjer named second team all-region

INDIANOLA – Simpson women's basketball player Stacey Schutjer earned D3hoops.com Second Team All-West Region honors for the second time in her career, as announced March 15, 2011.

The team, voted on by Sports Information Directors in each region, was selected from 680 nominations. The All-Region teams include three teams of five players (two teams if the region has 40 or fewer teams), a player of the year, rookie of the year and coach of the year.

Schutjer, a 6-foot-2 junior center from Titonka, Iowa, led Simpson in scoring (13.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg) in 2010-11. The Storm went 22-7, won a share of the Iowa Conference regular season title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship.

She led the Iowa Conference in field goal percentage (56.0), ranked fifth in scoring and third in blocked shots (61).

The sports administration major earned First Team All-Iowa Conference honors earlier this year and was a second team all-region selection a year ago. In the first game of the NCAA Tournament, Schutjer scored 16 points and grabbed a school record 20 rebounds in a 59-56 win over Concordia-Moorhead. With that performance, Schutjer became only the fifth player in school history to surpass 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career.

Joining Schutjer on the third team were senior Erica Nord of Concordia-Moorhead, junior Mariah Barbetti-Cort of Redlands, junior Keisha Gordon of George Fox and junior Gretchen Owens of Linfield. George Fox's Hannah Munger earned Player of the Year Honors, Coe's Rani Peterson was named Coach of the Year and Maggie Weiers of St. Thomas was the Rookie of the Year.

Schutjer was one of four Iowa Conference players named to an all-region team. Wartburg's Samantha Harrington and Coe's Kayla Lincoln were first team picks and Buena Vista's Jahde Hammer earned third team honors.

All nominees are eligible for the D3hoops.com All-America teams, which will be announced on Saturday, March 19 at the Final Four in Bloomington, Ill.
