Women's basketball falls victim to second-half comeback

ST. PAUL - UW-River Falls came back from a 12-point, second-half deficit in a 58-54 win against Simpson at the Northwestern Tip-Off Tournament on Friday afternoon.

Trailing by 12 with just over 14 minutes remaining, the Falcons (1-1) closed the game on a 28-12 run. Tiffany Gregorich scored a team-high 11 points, but Maranda Dohrn pulled down 15 rebounds - including 10 on the offensive glass - leading a stout Falcon effort on the boards.

River Falls out-rebounded Simpson 47-39 on the night and tallied 20 offensive rebounds.

Ali Sokol scored a game-high 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Storm (0-2), which will face the loser of Friday's Northwestern vs. North Central matchup at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Simpson led by seven at halftime and took a 12-point lead on a 3-pointer from Kelsie Reeves with 14:18 remaining in the second half. Reeves, Mindy Hutchcroft and Amy Hamilton all finished with nine points.

Dohrn gave River Falls a 49-48 lead when she knocked down a pair of free throws at the 7:54 mark. The lead grew to six before Hutchcroft hit two free throws and a 3-pointer from Hamilton cut the lead to one with 3:13 remaining.

But River Falls shut Simpson out in the final three minutes, holding on for the win.
