Weekend slate on horizon for Simpson athletics

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- A full weekend of competition is on the docket for Simpson men's and women's cross country, women's golf and women's tennis starting tomorrow.

The Storm women's golf team competes in the American Rivers Conference Championships, the cross country teams take part in the Dan Huston Triangular and women's tennis plays at home on Saturday.

Women's Golf
The A-R-C Championships begin this Saturday at the Ames Country Club as action continues through Monday for the three-day event. Simpson is coming off a sixth-place finish at the DMACC Invitational this past Monday, which was held on the same course.

At last year's championships, the Storm took home sixth and were led by a runner-up performance from Hannah Gordon. Senior Emily Jansen ended in a tie for 26th after shooting a three-day total of 282 in 2019.

Cross Country
Both the men and women take part in the Dan Huston Invitational on Saturday in Waverly, Iowa to compete against Central and Wartburg. The Knights have been on an impressive run and have won each meet this fall, while the men have had a perfect 15-point score each race and the women once.

Sophomore Spencer Moon has won both of the team's races to lead the men this fall. As a unit, the Storm recorded a second-place performance on Sept. 26 against Loras, losing by only a point.

The women's team took second place at the last race as well, falling to the Duhawks by a point and defeating Dubuque by 57. Junior Cat Lucht ended second overall for her second straight race leading Simpson. Freshman Lara Kallem grabbed third place for back-to-back top-10 showings to begin her career for the Storm.

Women's Tennis
On the heels of an A-R-C victory against Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday, Simpson will take on Coe (4-2, 3-2 A-R-C) tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Storm and Loras were originally scheduled to play tonight, but the contest has been postponed until Monday, Oct. 19.

Simpson grabbed an 8-1 win over the Prairie Wolves a day after sweeping Grand View inside the Buxton Tennis Complex. The Storm are 4-2 in league play for their most wins against conference foes since 2012-13.

Junior Anna Wanek is coming off back-to-back A-R-C Female Athlete of the Week honors and leads the league with nine victories. Emily King and Wanek have amassed seven triumphs as a duo, which also is atop the conference rankings. Donni Kinghorn has six wins during No. 5 singles play to lead that slot among A-R-C competitors.
