Cleveland qualifies for 110 meter hurdles final at nationals

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Max Cleveland of the Simpson men's track and field team qualified to the final of the 110 meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

Cleveland took second in the first of three heats in the preliminaries, running a 14.47. The time was the second-fastest of his Simpson career and only .04 seconds off his career-best he set at the midwest regional qualifier. The junior from Indianola will compete in the final, scheduled to go off at 12:50 p.m. central (Iowa) time.

Ulysses Patterson finished his championships on the second day of the decathlon. The sophomore, who qualified in 22nd, rose up to 15th place overall. Patterson's best individual event came in the discus, where he took third with a throw of 38.50 meters. Patterson also set a new career-best in the pole vault, with a mark of 3.80 meters. He finished overall with 6,203 points, just off the career-best he set at the Central Last Chance Multi last week.

The Storm will have two more chances at All-American status with Cleveland and Spencer Moon tomorrow. After Cleveland competes in the hurdles at 12:50 p.m., Moon will take to the track for the 5,000 meters, beginning at 3 p.m.
