Moon breaks 37 year old mile record

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Spencer Moon continued to add to his illustrious career by breaking the indoor mile record, originally set in 1986, at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational.

Moon, only one of two Division III runners out of 30 competitors, took fourth overall with a time of 4:08.77. Moon's time bettered the mark set by Jeff Brooks by almost three seconds, with the former record standing at 4:11.48.

Moon's run gives him his fourth indoor record and sixth total track and field school record. Moon currently holds the records in the indoor 3000 meter run (8:15.14) and the indoor 5000 meter run (14:17.51). He also was part of the distance medley relay team that set a new school record at last year's A-R-C Indoor Championships with a time of 10:08.63. Moon also holds two more outdoor records in the 1500 meters (3:47.87) and the 5000 meters (14:18.76).

"Spencer ran incredibly today," said Storm director of track and field Heath Moenck. "He does not get many opportunities to run the mile, so it was great to see him take advantage of it today."

Moon and his teammates are scheduled for a busy period next week. The squad competes in the Dutch Multi-Event in Pella on Thursday and Friday, before heading to the Grinnell Invitational next Saturday.
