Moon picks up weekly conference award

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - After a historic weekend at the conference championships, Spencer Moon of the Simpson College men's track and field team was named Co-American Rivers Conference Male Athlete of the Week.

Moon now has three career track athlete of the week awards to his name, after picking up one honor this past indoor season and his second one a couple of weeks ago. The junior distance phenom continues to fill up the Simpson history books, becoming the first track and field athlete in school history to win the indoor and outdoor track conference MVP awards in the same season. Moon won the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races and was named Co-Track MVP at the conference championships this past weekend.

The Lake City, Iowa native earned his fourth and fifth career track and field conference titles with the two race victories. Moon, the school record holder in both events, kicked off his championships with the 10,000 meters on Friday evening. Like his previous titles, Moon pulled away in the latter portions of the race, clocking a time of 30:49.91 after a more tactical race. He showed no signs of fatigue less than 24 hours later in the 5,000 meters, this time pulling away early to set a new championship and facility record of 14:23.64, defending his title from last season.

Moon is currently comfortably inside the top 20 times nationally in each event, used to determine the qualifiers for the NCAA Division III National Championships at the end of May. Moon is ranked seventh in the 10,000 meters and 12th in the 5,000 meters. Additionally, his best times both rank third in each event in the midwest region.
