Simpson outlasts Rams in nonconference battle

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Three different players scored for the Simpson College men's soccer in its 3-2 nonconference victory at Cornell on Sunday.

With the win, the Storm (2-0) improved to 23-1 in the all-time series with Cornell and have won five consecutive regular season games dating back to Oct. 20, 2021.

Baraka Ellie knotted the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the season in the 37th minute and Jackson Mears provided the Storm their first lead of the match in the 59th minute, less than 30 seconds after subbing into the game. His scoring opportunity was set up by junior Alan Imamovic.

After over 25 minutes of scoreless action, Juan Sandoval gave the Storm a huge insurance tally with 5:14 left to play. The sophomore capitalized on a defensive miscue by the Rams (0-2) for his first career goal at Simpson. The Rams sliced the lead in half shortly after, but the Storm held on for their second win of the season.

Ronaldo Ordaz and Mateaus Lewis each took three shots in the game, while Ellie, Ricardo Ibarra and Mears all had two apiece. Nate Hersom and William Kopp split time between the posts, each making one save.

The Storm claimed a 15-6 advantage in total shots and took 15 corner kicks during the match, the most since tallying 17 in a 3-0 win over Buena Vista on Oct. 15, 2019.
