Late Luther goal drops Simpson

INDIANOLA - Mark Fernandes hit the game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining, giving Luther a 2-1 win over Simpson at Buxton Stadium on Saturday.

Fernandes' goal gave the Norse (5-7-1, 2-4 IIAC) an important three points in the conference race and handed Simpson its fourth one-goal loss of the season.

"Soccer can be very unforgiving," head coach Mike Wilson said. "Regardless of how hard you work to prepare, sometimes things just don't go your way. I am certainly proud of our team's effort. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough this afternoon to obtain a positive result. We will continue to be diligent in our preparations and look forward to the next opponent."

Nate Van Horn's second goal of the season tied the game in the 24th minute. Despite being outshot 14-5 by Luther, the Storm (5-9, 2-3 IIAC) fought off the Luther attack until the final three minutes of regulation.

Luke Aronow made four saves between the posts, while his counterpart Steve O'Meara had two.

With only three conference contests remaining, the Storm find themselves in a fight to qualify for the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament. Up next is a crucial meeting with rival Central in Pella on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
