Four gymnasts win events, Jones breaks vault record
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Four individuals won event titles, Braxton Jones broke the school record on vault, and the Simpson College men's gymnastics team put forth its best performance of the young season on Friday night against Navy.
The Storm posted a score of 297.750 in their first home meet, winning rings and vault as a team. Navy led by just one point going into the fifth rotation of the night, but put together strong parallel bars and high bar lineups to finish with a 306.350.
Jones (vault) and Jake Smith (high bar) won their first collegiate event titles, with Jones' 14.350 on vault also breaking Camden Bontempo's previous school record. Smith tied his career-best high bar score of 13.000 to tie with Navy's Isaiah Drake for first.
Along with Jones and Smith, Brian Rollison (rings) and Alex Catchpole (parallel bars) earned gold medals. Both scored season highs as Rollison recorded a 13.500 and Catchpole registered a 13.250.
