Late-game heroics not enough for women's soccer against Grinnell

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Dabney Hofammann scored the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the second overtime and Grinnell came away with a 2-1 win over the Simpson women's soccer team in Friday night's season-opener.

Hofammann snuck a bouncing shot past a charging Kristin Riley in the 103rd minute as Grinnell spoiled a spirited effort in the final 55-plus minutes by Simpson.

Despite controlling the pace of play almost the entire second half, the Storm (0-1-0) still found themselves down 1-0 as the seconds ticked away in regulation. As the 10-second countdown began, Katelyn Behounek lifted a shot from 30 yards out on the right wing.

The offering arched over goalkeeper Katy Oldach's outstretched hand and inside the nearside upper-90 with just seven seconds left, forcing extra time.

Simpson spent much of the first overtime period in the attacking third of the field, and the execution nearly paid off with 32 seconds left when Heather Adolph lined up for a free kick.

Adolph - who has one of the team's strongest legs - fired the set piece over Grinnell's wall before Oldach made a diving save to force the second overtime.

The contest came to a close on Hofammann's runout in the second overtime frame.

Carolyn Silverman scored the first goal of the game for the Pioneers (1-0-0), who topped the Storm by a goal for the second season in a row.
