Women's soccer drops hard-fought match to William Penn

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Kelly Button scored the golden goal in the 98th minute and William Penn beat the Simpson women's soccer team 2-1 on Wednesday night, spoiling one of the Storm's best efforts of the season.

Button was the starting goalkeeper for the Statesmen (6-7-3) before re-entering as a field player in the second half. Her game-winner was a high-arching shot from 20 yards out that just cleared the reach of Simpson keeper Kristin Riley.

Riley made three saves for the Storm (2-14-1), who dropped their fourth overtime match in five tries.

Trailing 1-0 late into the second half, Simpson's offense dialed up the attack, resulting in a pair of corner kick opportunities. Simpson made the most of its first attempt, as Kate Morford headed in a perfect serve from Bailey Wilmes, tying the score 1-1 in the 78th minute.

Simpson remained on the attack through the end of regulation but couldn't come up with the game-winner.

William Penn outshot Simpson 4-0 in the overtime period.
