Barr goes 5-for-5 in opening day win

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Jake Barr tied a school record with five hits, Ethan Hale drove in four runs and the Simpson baseball team came back for an 11-8, opening day win over Sul Ross State at the University of the Ozarks on Saturday.

Barr went 5-for-5 with two doubles, an intentional walk and four runs scored for the Storm (1-0), who trailed 4-0 before taking their first swing.

Simpson trailed 7-4 when it came to bat in the bottom of the sixth, but Hale lined a two-out, two-RBI double into center to give Simpson an 8-7 lead.

Hale had a two-RBI single in the first and finished 2-for-4.

Leading 11-8 going into the ninth, Jose Rodriguez surrendered a leadoff walk but retired the next three batters to earn the save. Freshman Brock Borgeson (1-0) pitched a hitless ninth to earn the win, as Simpson sent a different pitcher to the mound each inning on the day.

Emmet Crisp had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Lobos (1-11).

Simpson will face Sul Ross State again at 10 a.m. Sunday before closing the weekend against Ozarks at 1:30 p.m.

Notes: Barr became the fifth Simpson player to record five hits in a game, marking the seventh time it has happened … Dave Johnson (2x in 2010), James Brown (2x in 2006), Jason McClaflin (2008) and Kyle Meyer (2007) are the only other players to achieve the feat in the records available to the Athletics Communication office.
