TUCSON, Ariz. – Dan Kluss and Kevin Pawell combined for the shutout as Concordia-Chicago handed the Simpson baseball team a 6-0 loss on Sunday.
Kluss (1-0) struck out nine in seven innings of work and Powell held on for the save in the season opener for Concordia. Dan Eichholzer went 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Cougars (1-0).
Blake Heitmeier led off the eighth with a single and Jake Barr drew a walk as Simpson threatened to cut into a 4-0 deficit. But Powell came on in relief of Kluss and ended the inning by getting Tyler Craig to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.
Barr, Heitmeier and Jake Esdorh each had two hits for the Storm (2-3). Jose Rodriguez (0-1) pitched well, but was saddled with the loss after giving up four hits in three innings.
