Bats quiet in losses to Coe

INDAINOLA, Iowa - Kevin Baranowski threw a complete-game one-hitter in game one and Wade Morris shut out Simpson in game two as Coe swept Saturday's doubleheader, 4-0 and 1-0.

The Kohawks (29-10, 18-6 Iowa Conference) clinched the regular season conference title with the win in game one.

Mike Huyser (Indianola, Iowa) and Chris Dorff (Urbandale, Iowa) pitched well for Simpson, but the offense couldn't dent the plate against Coe's hurlers. Both threw complete games, as Huyser (5-5) allowed six hits and four runs and Dorff (6-5) gave up four hits and one run.

The Storm (21-16, 13-10) closed the regular season fourth in the league.

In the opener, Coe took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Adam Nisenson drove in a run on an error and Brennan Melloy brought one in on a fielder's choice. Kevin Schuver added a two-RBI double in the seventh.

The Simpson offense moved only two runners into scoring position and didn't take advantage of its opportunities. Simpson put the leadoff runner on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but a good pickoff move by Baranowski (9-2) eliminated the baserunners in the fourth and sixth and the runner in the fifth was caught stealing.

Drew Yarkosky (Albia, Iowa) had the only hit in game one and Dave Johnson (West Des Moines, Iowa) and Blake Heitmeier (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) each walked twice.

Simpson out-hit Coe 5-4 in the nightcap, but the result was the same as the opener.

Sean Raisch drove in the only run of the game in the first inning, enough breathing room for Morris (9-2) who struck out five.

Simpson had chances in the first and fourth innings, advancing runners to third in each frame. But a strikeout left Johnson standing on third in the first inning and a grondout stranded Colton Calvert (St. Charles, Iowa) in the fourth.

Johnson went 2-for-3 and Dorff struck out six.

Simpson will have the No. 4 seed in the Iowa Conference Tournament, held May 12-14 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids. Visit www.iowaconference.com for complete matchups and game times.
