Simpson goes 1-2 to finish Spring Break trip

PHOENIX - Simpson got a great outing from Mike Huyser against UW-Stout on Thursday and Simpson closed play by going 1-2 in the final three games of the Russ Matt Greater Phoenix Invitational.

The Storm (7-5) beat UW-Stout 3-0 behind Huyser's performance in game one of a doubleheader on Thursday, dropping the nightcap 4-2. In a single game on Friday, Dickinson State beat Simpson 6-5.

Simpson closed play in Phoenix 4-5.

Simpson 3, UW-Stout 0
Huyser held the Blue Devils to five hits in the complete-game shutout and Drew Yarkosky drove in two runs for the Storm.

Huyser (2-1) struck out seven and walked only one batter. Yarkosky broke a scoreless tie with a 2-out, 2-RBI single in the fourth. Zach Smith added another run when he singled home Brad Agan with two outs in the fifth.

Huyser didn't allow a runner past second base and Simpson took advantage of three Stout errors.

UW-Stout 4, Simpson 2
Stout opened the game with a three-run first inning en-route to the 4-2 win.

Ben Yaucher went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Blue Devils (2-6). Zach Kiminski picked up the win, striking out six in five innings. Chris Lammert got the save.

Tyler Crandell went 2-for-4 and Colton Calvert tripled for the Storm. Grant Thomas drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Justin Svehla got an RBI on a sac fly to center.

Dickinson State 6, Simpson 5
Liam Foran's third RBI of the game resulted in the winning run for Dickinson State.

Foran hit a sacrifice fly to left in the sixth, breaking a 5-5 tie. He went 1-for-3 and scored three runs.

Crandell went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Dave Johnson drove in two, going 2-for-5. Chris Dorff (2-2) struck out four and allowed six runs in the loss, going six innings.

A back and forth affair, Agan and Yarkosky drove in runs for a 2-0 lead after two. Dickinson State scored five unanswered in the next two innings before Simpson tied with three in the fourth. An RBI-triple by Johnson sparked the run for Simpson.

Ryan Crossingham picked up the win for the Blue Hawks.

Simpson opens Iowa Conference play Friday, March 25 when it hosts Dubuque in a 6 p.m. start. The two teams will play a doublehader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
