Strong pitching helps Simpson sweep Loras

DUBUQUE - Mike Huyser went the distance for the win in game one and Paul Brown did the same in game two as Simpson swept Loras 2-1 and 6-2 on Saturday at Petrakis Park.

With the two wins, the Storm (12-5, 5-0 Iowa Conference) completed the series sweep of Loras, winning game one 9-4 on Friday. At 5-0, Simpson is off to its fastest start in conference play since opening 6-0 in 1999.

Trent Svehla went 5-for-5 on the day as part of a 9-for-9 weekend at the plate. Ethan Hale and Drew Yarkosky each collected two hits, Dave Johnson drove in three runs and Zach Smith had two RBIs.

Simpson 2, Loras 1
Huyser (4-1) held Loras to four hits and struck out nine, Smith hit a two-run homer in the second and Simpson beat Loras 2-1 in game one.

The second home run of Smith's career came with two outs in the second. Svehla led off the inning with a single before two straight outs, when Smith sent a Kendall Paluch delivery over the left field fence.

Paluch (2-2) took the loss for the Duhawks (7-12, 0-6), giving up four hits and striking out five in the complete game. Calvin Rea's solo home run in the first produced the only chink in Huyser's armor.

Simpson 6, Loras 2
Brown (3-1) held Loras to five hits and struck out five, Johnson drove in three runs and Simpson scored the first six runs of the game in the 6-2 win.

Simpson took advantage of four Duhawk errors, scoring three unearned runs.

Johnson drove in a run in the first on an error and Svehla came around to score on a throwing error, giving Simpson a 2-0 lead.

A triple by Johnson brought home two runs in the fifth, extending the lead to 4-0. Svehla singled in a run in the seventh and pinch-runner Brett Crable scored when Jake Barr coaxed a bases-loaded walk, giving the Storm their final run total.

Svehla went 3-for-3 and Yarkosky went 2-for-4. Mark Jablonski had two hits for the Duhawks and Kevin Moriarity (1-2) took the loss.

Simpson returns to action Tuesday, April 5 when Central visits McBride Field for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
