Storm drop doubleheader to Buena Vista

STORM LAKE - Defending Iowa Conference Champion Buena Vista flexed its muscles on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader with Simpson 5-0 and 15-1.

The Beavers (18-11, 9-6 Iowa Conference) out-hit Simpson 24-10 on the day, taking the season series after a 5-1 win Friday night.

Undefeated in seven games against conference opponents at home, the Storm (18-11, 11-6) dropped to 4-6 away from McBride Field.

Buena Vista touched up starter Paul Brown (Polk City, Iowa) early in game one, plating four runs off five hits in the opening frame. Brock Yossi and Kevin Kloewer registered run-scoring singles and Andy Compton hit a two-RBI double.

Brown (4-3) settled down after the first inning, allowing one run off four hits. He went the distance, striking out four.

Michael Dirx (2-2) held off the Simpson offense, surrendering three hits and striking out 10 in the complete-game shutout. Simpson had runners on third with two outs on two occasions.

Buena Vista erupted for seven runs in the second inning of game two, cutting starter Chris Dorff's (Urbandale, Iowa) day short.

After back-to-back singles to open the inning, Brad Blum drove in a run on a base hit. Yossi drew a walk for the second run of the inning and Mike Hoffman brought in a run on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Kloewer roped a two-RBI triple and Ryan Scheetz followed with a two-run homer to right.

Compton finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Scheetz went 2-for-3. Reggie Kock (1-2) got the win, striking out six in five innings.

Dave Johnson (West Des Moines, Iowa) scored the only run for Simpson in the fourth, going 2-for-2. Jake Barr drove in Johnson, finishing 1-for-2. Dorff (6-3) went three innings, allowing nine runs off nine hits.

Entering the weekend first in the Iowa Conference, Simpson dropped to third, behind Coe (20-9, 12-5) and Luther (19-10, 9-4).  The Storm have a chance to pick up ground next weekend when it travels to Decorah for a three-game set against the Norse beginning April 29. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Friday afternoon with Saturday's doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
