Simpson sweeps Marian behind Yarkosky's perfect day

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Drew Yarkosky went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs as Simpson swept Marian (Wis.) 11-7 and 12-5 at the Russ Matt Greater Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday.

With the wins, the Storm (6-3) even their Spring Break record to 3-3. Marian is now 2-4.

Yarkosky, Tyler Crandell and Colton Calvert drove in two runs each and Simpson broke open a 1-run game with six runs in the sixth inning.

Yarkosky went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, getting both hits in the sixth inning. He led off the frame with a triple and hit a two-RBI single in his second at-bat.

Both of Calvert's RBIs came in the sixth and Tyler Crandell went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Dave Johnson tripled in his first at-bat and scored twice.

Mark Butler (1-0) earned a win in his first career start, allowing four runs - three earned - in five innings of work.

Marian out-hit Simpson 16-10.

Yarkosky and Brad Agan drove in three runs apiece and Simpson scored 11 runs in the first three innings.

The Storm came within two doubles of tying a school record, hitting six against the Sabers.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the second, Simpson took advantage of a Marian error to score five unearned runs as part of a six-run inning. John Hupp hit an RBI double and Brett Crable, Johnson and Agan each drove in a run in the inning. Yarkosky closed the scoring with a two-RBI double.

Simpson showed five different pitchers in the game, with starter Matt Russell (1-1) picking up the win. He allowed one run and two hits in three innings, striking out four. Michael Chia, Warren Drucker, Robert Endriss and Kyle Pullins each logged an inning.

Eight of nine starters recorded a hit for the Storm.

Simpson has Wednesday off and resumes play with a doubleheader against UW-Stout beginning at 9 a.m. MST on St. Patrick's Day.
