Simpson edged by Greenville in home opener
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Freshman Emma Charles won two event titles and tied two school records to lead the Simpson College women's gymnastics team in its home opener against fellow second-year program Greenville.
The Storm were edged by just 0.525 in the team score as Greenville claimed the team title with an all-around score of 186.725. Despite not coming out on top, Simpson tallied its highest-ever team score with a 186.200. The Storm also set a new program high on bars (43.950).
Charles earned first place on vault (9.700) and beam (9.725), while tying a pair of school records on bars (9.150) and beam. Her score on vault was .05 away from tying a third program record and her bars score earned third place.
Other placewinners for the Storm were Kaelyn Tally, Emma Tolbert and Annika Cole. Tally finished behind Charles on vault with a 9.625, while Tolbert and Cole tied for second place on floor with a 9.700.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Simpson earned its highest-ever team score with a 186.200. The previous record was 185.175 from Feb. 4 last season.
- The Storm improved their highest-ever bars score by .4 points, earning a 43.950.
- The home team won vault and floor, while the visitors secured the bars and beam titles.
- Emma Charles won the individual vault crown outright and tied Greenville's Amara Nelson for first place on beam. She also garnered third place honors on bars.
- Kaelyn Tally placed second on vault with a season-high 9.625.
- Emma Tolbert and Annika Cole tied for second place on floor with a 9.700. This was Cole's first appearance in the varsity floor lineup.
- Izzy Brown improved her career-best beam score to 9.525 (previously 9.350).
