Cord wins javelin throw, Simpson places sixth at IIACs

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - John Cord gave Simpson its second gold medal at the Iowa Conference Championships on Saturday at Ash Park, winning the javelin throw and helping the Storm place sixth overall.

Central won the meet with 250 points. Wartburg finished second with 181.5 and Luther placed third with 123.5. Simpson scored 50 points.

A sophomore, Cord (Atlantic, Iowa) started throwing the javelin for the first time this season and threw a personal best on Saturday, reaching 172 feet (52.43 meters). He also placed seventh in the triple jump, leaping 40-11 (12.47 meters).

After winning the 10,000 meters Friday, Ryan Edwardson (Spencer, Iowa) came back and placed fourth in the 5,000 with a personal best time of 15:13.65. With his win in the 10k on Friday, Edwardson became the first Simpson distance runner to win a conference championship since 1996.

Matt Stone (Boone, Iowa) added a pair of fourth-place finishes. He finished fourth in the 800 (2:00.74) and the 1500 (4:02.34).

Simpson's other individual point scorers came from Ted Heying (Sumner, Iowa) and Cole Reese (Runnells, Iowa) in the 400-meter hurdles. Heying finished seventh (59.22) and Reese finished eighth (1:0.77).
