STORM LAKE, Iowa — The Simpson men's basketball team nearly erased a 23-point, second-half deficit but couldn't complete the comeback in a 100-89 loss at Buena Vista on Monday.
Sam Amsbaugh scored 19 points and Jamie Montgomery added 13 off the bench for the Storm (11-7, 4-5 Iowa Conference), who pulled within four points with 3 minutes left in the game after trailing 79-56.
Simpson mounted a furious 27-7 run over a 5-minute, 28-second stretch. Down 89-83, Amsbaugh's 3 from the left wing rimmed in-and-out with less than 2 minutes to play. Kennedy Drey made a layup and Montgomery's 3 also rimmed out, effectively ending the comeback.
Drey scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Beavers (12-6, 8-1), who shot 66 percent from the field. Connor Winkelman scored 18 points off the bench and Paul Gallagher finished with nine points and seven assists.
Simpson made a season-high 12 3-pointers in the loss.
