Storm can’t regain early lead in loss to Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Sam Amsbaugh's game-high 23 points weren't enough for the Simpson men's basketball team Saturday, which couldn't hold an early lead in an 80-70 loss to Coe.
Marshall Shedeck scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures for the Kohawks (10-4, 4-2 Iowa Conference), who came back from eight points down to win their third game in a row. Matt Vonderhaar finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
DJ Dafney scored 12 points and Cody Good added 12 more off the bench for the Storm (9-6, 2-4), who never led in the second half in dropping their fourth straight contest. Amsbaugh went 9-for-14 from the field, scoring 15 points in the second half.
Shedeck and Tommy Hook made 3-pointers during Coe's 13-4 run to close the first half, turning a five-point deficit into a 40-36 halftime lead.
The teams traded baskets for most of the second half, but the Storm couldn't regain the lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Good and Jamie Montgomery and a layup by Amsbaugh made it 54-all with 10:34 to play, but Austin Roth responded with a short jumper to trigger a 12-2 Kohawk run.
One game after setting a school record for free throws, Coe made its living at the charity stripe again, going 21-for-25 from the line while Simpson attempted just 19. Coe shot 51 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the second half.
Amsbaugh, Austin Turner, DJ Dafney, and Sabonis Smith all scored during Simpson's 8-0 run to open the game. Coe came back to tie the game by the 15-minute mark and Simpson couldn't extend its lead to more than six the rest of the half.
Simpson committed just six turnovers in the game but was out-rebounded by 13.
The final Saturday at Cowles Fieldhouse this season, Simpson recognized its six seniors prior to the game: DJ Dafney, Cody Good, Cort Singleton, Ryan Skaar, Brook Thompson and Austin Turner.

It's a quick turn-around for Simpson, which travels to Storm Lake to face Buena Vista on Monday. The first-place Beavers (9-6, 5-1) beat Luther 50-47 on Saturday.
