Football quartet selected as academic all-district

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson football placed Sam Bartlett, Trey Chumbley, Joe Meyer and Joe Weppler on the 2019 Academic All-District 8 First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Storm paced the district with the most selections from one team out of the 30 players honored from NCAA Division III programs across 21 states and Canada.

2019 Academic All-District Football Team

Sam Bartlett
A senior wide receiver from St. Louis, Mo., Bartlett has a 3.32 cumulative GPA as a management major. Bartlett currently leads the conference in receiving yards (1,124), receiving touchdowns (15) and total scoring (90). Bartlett recently broke the school record for TD catches in a season with 15 after a three-score performance last Saturday at Loras.

Trey Chumbley
A senior defensive end from Grimes, Iowa, Chumbley is a two-time Academic All-District performer as a computer science major and holds a 3.78 GPA. Chumbley currently has 33 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Joe Meyer
A junior running back from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Meyer owns a 3.86 GPA as a history major. Meyer is currently second in the American Rivers Conference in rushing yards with 769 and has produced four 100-yard rushing games this year including one 200-yard performance against Nebraska Wesleyan.

Joe Weppler
A senior linebacker from Sheldon, Iowa, Weppler maintains a 3.92 GPA as a criminal justice major. Weppler is third on the team in tackles with 72 and has one interception.

The 2019 Academic All-District® Football Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.
