Missed opportunities stall offense in loss at Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Miscues and missed chances were the theme for the Simpson football team during a low-scoring 10-7 loss at Coe Saturday afternoon as the Storm came short of pushing the streak to three straight wins over the Kohawks.

Coe (6-2, 5-1 A-R-C) capitalized by forcing three Storm (4-3, 3-2 A-R-C) interceptions and four turnover on downs during the American Rivers Conference affair to remain in second place.

Simpson started two drives within the Kohawks' 10-yard line and could not come away with points. In the opening quarter, Nico Pelkey blocked a punt and Cash Lee recovered the ball on the 4-yard line to set the Storm up with a 1st-and-goal, but would not push the ball across the goal line and was stopped on fourth down.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Simpson found itself with another good starting position, this time at the hosts' 8-yard line. Coe held tight on defense and secured an interception to keep the Storm off the board.

Simpson also had a 12-play, 72-yard drive fall short of no points after missed a field goal in the third quarter to keep the team scoreless.

The Kohawks opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 7-yard pass play to take a 7-0 lead into halftime. Coe would tack on three more points with less than three minutes to play in the fourth quarter coming off a 26-yard field goal to make it 10-0 late in the contest.

The Storm finally found pay dirt as Terrhyn Jacoby hauled in his first TD of the season with a 31-yard pass from Tanner Krueger. Simpson would recover the onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but would turn the ball over on downs to end the chances of a comeback on the road.

Joe Meyer ended with 106 yards on 26 carries with a long of 27 yards out of the backfield after only one carry in last week's game. Reed Worth brought in six catches for 79 yards as Tanner Krueger completed 20 passes for 199 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, the secondary recorded three interceptions to keep Simpson in the game. Parker Schenk highlighted the pick party with a 59-yard return to place the ball on Coe's 8-yard line. Brendan Holmes tallied his second interception of the year and attached a 25-yard run afterwards. Cam Callion produced the other pick for the defense. Michael Connor and Joe Weppler each had 14 tackles.

Notes
• Jacoby had three kickoff returns during the game and tallied 77 yards with a long of 35 yards to help set up the offense with nice field position.
• This is the fewest points Simpson has scored in a game since tallying six in a loss at Dubuque last season on Nov. 3.
• Simpson was just 2 of 6 on fourth down and 7 of 9 on third down.
