Football Preview: Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- With a spot for second place in the American Rivers Conference on the line, Simpson and Coe meet as the Storm look to make it three wins in a row over the Kohawks. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday.

Simpson (4-2, 3-1 A-R-C) received its first loss in A-R-C play last weekend after a 25-19 outcome against Wartburg inside Buxton Stadium. Coe (5-2, 4-1 A-R-C) comes into the contest after winning 56-21 against Nebraska Wesleyan last Saturday on the road in Lincoln, Neb.

FIRST AND 10: As the hunt for an American Rivers Conference Championship continues, two teams battling for the crown will meet up on Saturday ... Simpson and Coe will compete for second place as both teams have one loss in conference play ... the Storm come into this weekend's game after a 29-15 loss to Wartburg at home, in which Simpson held an early 9-0 lead and a late 15-14 tilt, but could not hang on to defeat the first-place Knights ... the Kohawks played in Lincoln, Neb. to win 56-21 over Nebraska Wesleyan.

COE SERIES NOTES: Simpson and Coe are meeting for the 44th time in a series that dates back to 1910 with the Kohawks owning a 26-16-1 record ... the Storm have had success as of late with two straight wins in the series and have won four of the last six meetings ... Simpson claimed a 29-7 triumph in last year's contest inside Buxton Stadium.

ABOUT THE KOHAWKS: Coe has league wins over Buena Vista, Loras, Luther and Nebraska Wesleyan, with the only blemish coming against Dubuque ... the Kohawks are third in the conference in scoring at 30.6 points a game and the defense is second in points allowed at 17.6 ... Coe has been strong up front on the defensive side of the ball by allowing just 103.7 yards rushing per contest, which tops the league ... quarterback Quentin White is third in passing at 260.3 yards a game and fourth in TDs with 14.

STORM IN THE RANKINGS: Sam Bartlett is still making his case as one of the top receivers in the nation after adding to his stats in last week's game against Wartburg.

TANNER THE THROWER: Quarterback Tanner Krueger passed for a career-high 367 yards last week and has hit the 300-yard passing plateau for the fifth time in his career and third time this season ... Krueger also had his most efficient game of the season by completing 63.8 percent of his passes and finished with the most completions of his career in a game with 30.

WORTH THE WAIT: After just one career reception through the first five games of the season, freshman Reed Worth exploded onto the scene last weekend with nine catches for a team-high 88 yards ... Worth had a 9-yard TD catch to give Simpson a 15-14 lead late in the game and hauled in a 31-yard catch on the final drive of the game.

DEFENSIVE DUO: Michael Connor and Brendan Holmes led the defense last week as the Storm held Wartburg to its lowest-scoring output of the season with 29 points as the Knights' offense averages 51.8 points per game ... Connor tallied 14 tackles with one sack ... Holmes added a sack to his stat sheet along with eight tackles ... Holmes had a big play in the first quarter to keep Wartburg off the board as he intercepted a pass in the endzone and returned it 23 yards to set up a scoring drive for Simpson.

AROUND THE A-R-C: As Wartburg sits in first place with a 5-0 league mark, three teams are vying for second place with one loss each ... along with Simpson, Central and Coe each have one blemish on their schedules, while Dubuque is sitting close with two ... other than the Storm taking on the Kohawks, Dubuque visits Luther, Buena Vista is at Loras and Nebraska Wesleyan plays the Dutch as the first-place Knights get the weekend off.
