Volleyball falls twice on Friday night

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Simpson College women's volleyball team fell short in a pair of nonconference matches on Friday night at the Wis.-La Crosse Tournament.

The Storm (3-7) managed to take at least one set from each opponent, but ultimately fell 3-1 to Macalester (5-5) and 3-2 to Wis.-La Crosse (9-3).

Despite not coming away with a win, Simpson registered 14 more kills than its opponents with 98 total. The Storm also held the upperhand in digs (145-119), aces (17-10) and assists (93-78).

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • The Scots took a 2-0 lead in the match with a pair of 25-19 wins in sets one and two.
  • Simpson used an early 7-1 run to take a 10-3 lead in the third set, eventually winning 25-22 behind six kills from Josie Ayala.
  • The two teams battled point-for-point in the fourth set, and Simpson nearly sent the match into a fifth, but Macalester broke a 22-22 tie with three straight points for the 3-1 victory.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • The Storm got off to a dominating start in the opening set, leading 15-5 midway through. Wis.-La Crosse edged the Storm 8-7 in kills, but Simpson tallied four blocks and four aces on its way to a 25-17 set one win.
  • The next two sets went to the Eagles by tight scores of 25-23 and 25-22.
  • Unlike the first game of the day, the Storm were able to force a fifth set with a 25-20 victory in the fourth. Simpson tallied a match-high 13 kills in the frame, with Lauren Roman accounting for five.
  • The fifth set did not get out to a great start for the Storm as the Eagles scored the first six points fueled by four blocks. Simpson began chipping at the lead and managed to tie the set at 9-all, but the hosts regrouped in their timeout and secured the match with a 15-11 set win.
