Volleyball sweeps Luther in A-R-C battle

DECORAH, Iowa -- The Simpson College volleyball team earned its second straight American Rivers Conference victory in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23) sweep at Luther on Tuesday.

The Storm (4-6, 2-0 A-R-C) hit over .300 for the second time this season to move to 2-0 in league play for the first time since 2009. This is the first time Simpson has swept a league opponent since defeating Central on Sept. 11, 2018.

The Storm jumped out to a quick 7-2 advantage in the first set before pushing the lead to nine later in the frame over the Norse (2-12, 0-2 A-R-C). The offense ended with 14 kills in the set.

Luther chipped away at a seven-point deficit in set two to place the game at 18-17 in favor of the visitors. Simpson was able to execute a 7-2 spurt to close out the frame after sophomore Teria Campbell had two kills during the run.

Set three was nearly a repeat of the previous as the Norse trimmed a six-point difference. With the score at 15-9, Luther made an 11-2 run to grab the lead to force a Storm timeout. Freshman Blayne Koster tallied a kill out of the break before the Norse earned one to keep the two-point buffer intact. Back-to-back Storm kills placed the set at 21-21 before the Norse ended the frame with three straight attacking errors to end the match.

Junior Jessica Jacobs ended with 15 kills by hitting .483, freshman Courtney Paxton had six kills and four others had four. Junior Marissa Salber recorded 26 assists.
